The Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, in collaboration with the TUM SEED Center, Germany, is pleased to announce a call for applications for a doctoral scholarship in Sustainable Energy Entrepreneurship.
This fully funded scholarship runs for four years (1 February 2026 – 31 January 2030) and offers:
- Enrollment at Stellenbosch University (South Africa) as the main study location
- Possibility for co-supervision by Prof. Dr. Frank-Martin Belz, Director of the TUM SEED Center (Germany)
- Monthly stipend and research funding
- International mobility grants to TUM and SEED partner universities
- Coverage of conference participation
The PhD research will focus on scaling and the impact of sustainable enterprises in the mini-grid sector, contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy for All by 2030. The research is connected to the Living Labs established across SEED Centers and collaborating partners.
Eligibility requirements include:
- Master’s degree (obtained within the last six years) in sustainable energies, business management (with a focus on entrepreneurship), or related fields
- Research or professional experience at the intersection of management and sustainable energies
- Excellent academic track record and proficiency in English
- Citizenship from one of the eligible countries in the Global South

Applicants are required to complete two steps:
- Submit an application via the Stellenbosch University system
- Fill out the application form via Google Forms
Both steps are compulsory. Failure to complete either will result in disqualification.
