1. The use of claims as indicators in the patent literature

Since Griliches’ (1990) seminal paper on patent statistics the empirical literature that uses patent data has thrived. Among other patent-based indicators such as family size and citations, patents’ claims have been widely used such in diverse settings as litigations and patent value.

The aim of this thesis is to identify studies that rely on patent claims as an operationalization in their empirical design and to discuss the main interpretations of patent claims in these studies.

2. Standards and patents

"With a patent this product would have never become the European standard" (Lazzaro quoted in Rees, 2012).

Standards are important for the adoption and diffusion of new technologies and have thus become of interest in innovation research. The starting point of this study is the evaluation and discussion of the academic literature on standards and patents in the light of the statement given above.
