International Experience

Description

This module gives an introduction to basic theoretical knowledge in scientific conceptualization of culture, cultural standards and cultural dimensions. Important scientific approaches are introduced and discussed in more detail, for example, the cultural dimensions according to Geert Hofstede or according to Edward T. Hall. By exemplifying cultural characteristics based on selected case studies, the module shows how people with different cultural background interact and how to deal with these differences. Through this, students become conscious of their own culture amidst the variety of cultures they may meet in people from elsewhere. Additionally, basic theoretical knowledge about ethical guidelines, sustainability and inequality in intercultural interactions in an international context is provided. Ethical guidelines for intercultural action are described, as well as the Human Development Index and the Ecological Footprint, as two important indices for measuring sustainable development. In addition, the interaction of cultural dimensions on the determinants of environmental sustainability of an institution are discussed and economic inequality is introduced.
